Unbound Medicine and Johns Hopkins Launch HIV Website for Central America - Spanish-Language Guide Created and Distributed Using the Unbound™ Platform
Charlottesville, VA, December 06, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Unbound Medicine, a leader in knowledge management solutions for healthcare, announced the launch of La Guía del VIH de Johns Hopkins, a web service developed in partnership with the Johns Hopkins POC-IT Center. The service, a Spanish-language adaptation of the Johns Hopkins HIV Guide, is a collaborative project of The Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education, the Pan American Health Organization, and Gorgas Memorial Institute in Panama. The entire project, from content creation through web delivery, is supported by Unbound Medicine's end-to-end digital publishing platform.
Integration of HIV diagnosis and management into primary medical services is advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical means of improving patient care throughout the world. In Central America a major barrier to this practice is a scarcity of health care workers trained in guidelines for testing and patient care in HIV. “A distance-based curriculum and on-site training program developed by Hopkins and international agencies was initiated with approximately 300 providers,” explained Kathleen Page, MD, coordinator of Latin American programs and assistant professor of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins. “We strongly believe that La Guía del VIH can help us move basic HIV care from the hands of the few local specialists to a larger number of providers who care for the most underserved and at-risk groups in the community.”
The content for the new service began as a translation of the highly regarded Johns Hopkins HIV Guide. The translation was developed and customized for the Central American region by the Hopkins team using Unbound Medicine's uPub™ authoring and content management system. The design of the service mirrors that of www.HopkinsGuides.com, launched by Unbound Medicine as the home for the mobile + web versions of the Johns Hopkins Antibiotic, Diabetes, and HIV Guides. More than a simple translation, La Guía del VIH has been enhanced with region-specific recommendations, references and commentary.
“We are pleased to extend our publishing relationship with Johns Hopkins and to deploy our technology platform and content expertise on behalf of this important project,” added Bill Detmer, MD, president of Unbound Medicine. “We share with Hopkins the belief that evidence-based, region-specific guidance delivered to healthcare providers in the local language can make a meaningful difference in global health.”
The service is being made available free of charge to health care facilities in Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama with support from the international agencies above and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
